Parthenogenetic activation of oocytes was not observed in medium alone or in DMSO-treated oocytes, but the activation rates in A23187-treated oocytes significantly increased (19.8 ± 9.7-62.3 ± 14.7%) as A23187 concentration (10-100 (jlM) increased (Table 1). Zona dissolution time in 0.1% pronase solution was significantly {p < 0.05) increased in oocytes treated with 25100 |xM A23187 as compared with oocytes treated with medium alone, DMSO, or 10 (jlM A23187 (Table 1). As shown in Table 2, 79.8 ± 10.3% of oocytes without treatment and 79.0 ± 14.3% of DMSO-treated oocytes were penetrated by spermatozoa (p > 0.05). However, significantly lower penetration rates were observed in A23187-treated oocytes, and when the concentrations of A23187 were increased to 50 and 100 (xM, the penetration of oocytes was almost completely blocked, resulting in 4.3 ± 4.2% and 3.0 ± 3.6% penetration rates, respectively. Poly-spermic penetration also decreased as sperm penetration rates decreased. However, no differences were observed in the rates (79.3 ± 4.6-100%) of male pronuclear formation in the sperm-penetrated oocytes (Table 2).
